Spooktacular Senior Luncheon

Our monthly gathering of senior parishioners took on ghostly aires as they revisited their youth for the Fall Halloween celebration. The hall was festooned with orange and black banners, telling them to be “Happy” while rattling their nerves with images of skeletons, bats and witch’s brew. A giant black spider eyed guests from her web dangling overhead to ensure that they each paid for lunch.

Patrons were asked to write the names of loved ones who have left this realm on paper and place them on the  “Ofrenda,” where photos, religious items and colorful food had been set out in the tradition of “Dia de los Muertos,” the Mexican way to celebrate All Souls’ Day (Nov.2nd). The souls of the departed are invited to join us in celebrating the life and love we shared with them.

Along the wall, bowls of candy lured the innocent to play carnival games of skill and chance, while players hoped they wouldn’t lose their soul!

After opening prayers, a devilishly delicious German banquet began – Chicken Schnitzel, sausage on rolls, sauerkraut,  sweet potatoes, and salad were the offerings presented by San Diego Catering Co. Atria Senior Living brought fresh baked heavenly apple pies for dessert at our Fall Festival. Karinna, the general manager, invited parishioners to come take a tour and enjoy lunch in the Atria dining hall.

With “Ghostbusters” and “Thriller” playing in the background, everyone felt young again, until they stood up and tried to walk! Thank you to all the volunteers who put this great event together.

Join us next month on Thursday, Nov. 20th, for our Thanksgiving Celebration. San Diego Catering will be providing the meal – A full turkey dinner will be plated and served to each table. The cost will be $20 at the door, but you must sign up in advance, as we are strictly limited to 100 guests.  Sign up sheets will be in the narthex beginning Nov. 9th.
