Our senior parishioners gathered Thursday and gave thanks to Almighty God for food, friendship, and fresh air. This year’s Luau celebrated the San Diego surf culture with a mock-up of the Windansea surf shack and a display of surfboards. (Thank you, Monica, Sharon and Dan.) Plumaria cuttings from Mary W., palm leaves, and miniature surf figures decorated the tables and beach scenes covered the walls, giving the room a distinctly summer vacation vibe.
Tropical apparel abounded as the Aloha spirit filled the room. Guests received leis upon arrival, adding to their festive appearance. Surf music from the sixties was the memorable soundtrack of the day. “Endless Summer,” a famous surf documentary played on the big screen, as folks enjoyed Hawaiian Punch and coffee while visiting.
Chicken teriyaki with rice, coleslaw, rolls, and tropical fruit made for a colorful buffet. Afterwards, delicious cake made its appearance as Dan took the mike to give us a lesson on surfboard design and share memories of beach life along the So Cal coast. Sharon told of an exciting encounter her son had with a shark. Don’t worry – two heroic dolphins saved the day!
All in all, it was a wonderful way to end the summer together.
Please join us next month on September 18th as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with enchiladas, rice, and beans. Bring a friend!
