Red, White, and Blue…and Army Green

Thursday saw the parish hall festooned in patriotic banners as our seniors celebrated 4 American holidays, PLUS the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army.

Five guests were formerly in the army and many more had family members who had served. In fact, Elsie Miguel proudly shared that seven of her nine brothers were in the army. Wow!

Lt. Colonel (ret’d) Mike O’Hara led us in saying the Pledge of Allegiance and grace.

Our army vets led the charge to the chow line. Within 12 minutes, the buffet was devoid of all the hamburgers, potato salad, and watermelon. Boot camp really burns the calories!

While friendly conversations and John Phillip Sousa march music filled the air, the guests enjoyed slices of cake.

After lunch, JoEllyn keyed up the videos and Maureen led the group in a sing-along to celebrate America. The Caissons came rolling along. The Battle Hymn of the Republic brought a tear to our eyes. Then, we took a song-filled road trip down “Country Roads”, through wind-swept “Oklahoma”, “Deep in the Heart of Texas”, and on to the west coast beaches filled with “California Girls.” Our final tune was Woodie Guthrie’s wonderful ode to America, “This Land is Your Land.”

Please join us next month as we celebrate Baseball and enjoy ice cream sundaes.
