St. Paul’s “Pastoral Letters, 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus” Plus, the early epistles: Galatians, and 1 & 2 Thessalonians

St. Paul’s “Pastoral Letters” are three very personal correspondences, two of them to his young protégé, Timothy, and one to his long-time assistant, Titus. St. Paul and Timothy have a very close relationship, much like that of a father and a son (indeed, St. Paul refers to Timothy as “my dear son,” 2 Timothy 1: 2). In 1 Timothy, Paul has sent Timothy to Ephesus to fix serious problems in the church, problems involving senior leadership. It’s a big task, and Paul offers young Timothy sage advice, including: “Stop drinking only water, and have a little wine” (1 Timothy 5: 23)!

In 2 Timothy, St. Paul is on “death row” in Rome, awaiting his execution. 2 Timothy is St. Paul’s “last will and testament,” the letter in which St. Paul passes on his ministry to Timothy. Titus has been sent to Crete to solve problems in that church, and Titus, like Timothy, faces a big task, for as St. Paul says: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes and lazy gluttons” (Titus 1: 12)!
